  • I've always considered myself a dog person. I have a Wolf tattoo, I want a Malamute.. I used to dream about having a team of sled dogs, when I was a little girl I read books about kids raised by Wolves. I was all about White Fang, Call of The Wild, Dances With Wolves... I had two dogs growing up, Fluffy and Layla (hey.. I was 4 years old when I named Fluffy, and she was fluffy as hell so...). You get it. My most favorite friend in the world happens to live on the south side of Milwaukee, near Pete's Fruit Market off Ceasar Chavez, and she sends me a message one day in October asking if I want a cat. Turns out she, being the big-hearted person she is, has this street cat who she's been feeding outside since summer. So she sends me a picture of this cute little Tuxedo (black with white markings) Domestic Shorthair. I don't think much of it, I'm not really into cats. A couple weeks go by and my friend sends a message saying she's going to have to take the cat to the Humane Society, because it's getting cold out and she can't take the cat because she already has one. She sends me a video of this cat. So I look at my hubby, show him the video, and give him the sad eyes... It doesn't take much because hubby, being the good human being that he is, is equally as smitten with this lil furball. So I decide I'll go out to Milwaukee and check this lil kitty out. Long story short, I came home that evening with a cat hailing from the south side of Miltown. Not ever having owned a cat, I had no idea what I was doing, I just knew she needed a home. In comes the Spay me clinic. Lily came to us with fleas, she wasn't fixed, and she was very small. She had claws, as well. I called the Humane Society about getting Lily all checked out and was lectured about declawing cats. I was told it is like amputation, and is considered torture in the cat loving world. Scratch out the declawing part. I bought a scratching post instead. Anyways, so I'm calling around and I finally find a non profit clinic full of wonderful people working their asses off to make sure feral and stray cats are spayed and neutered in order to help control the population. They charge 100 bux and will spay, delouse, give immunizations, check for FIV, and clip claws. That price also gives you 3 days worth of pain meds for the pumpkin. I dropped Lily off at 7am and picked her up at 6pm the same day. Fast forward to now and I have a happy, pudgy, cute lil rugrat that I never imagined I would have. She still is street, she can't stand other cats and loves to attack our feet - but she has a forever home no matter what antics she comes up with. I guess that makes me more of an animal person than anything else. I love what the Spay Me Clinic in Sun Prairie is doing for the stray and feral animal population. If you bring in feral cats they will spay and neuter for free. I met a woman in the clinic while waiting to pick up Lily, who takes feral cats to the clinic. With feral cats I guess they roam wild in pretty large groups. They are too wild to ever become pets again so people like the woman I met capture them and spay them so they can't reproduce - and she sets them free again. I love seeing people living out their passions in life. I could tell this woman was passionate about her cause. I like this place.
