I have visited Masthead at least 3 times now. I'm a big fan. Located downtown a couple blocks from Hofbrauhaus. Last summer a group of us went to Masthead first for a couple beers, then walked over to Hofbrauhaus for dinner. They are that close to each other.
The space is a large open space. Long rows of picnic tables line the place and reminds me of large beer hall. In the summer their wall looking out to the street is a row of garage doors that was open that also had outdoor seating. In winter those are obviously closed. There are TV's all around the bar area if someone was hoping to catch a game on TV. Behind the bar is where the brewery operations are set up. To the left of the bar is where the kitchen is. You wait in a line (there are several around the bar to choose from) to place your drink and food order. You pick up your food from the kitchen when its ready.
I have visited on a Friday night to grab a beer and some appetizers. Summer Saturday afternoon. To a can release they recently starting doing. That was yesterday. Was run very smoothly. You get a number when you enter the door and the TVs show the number being served. Pretty easy. I was in and out in under an hour.
As for the food I've tried the ham wrapped cherry peppers. They are stuffed with smoked mozzarella topped with spicy honey. They weren't spicy to me at all. The saltiness from the ham balanced the sweetness from the sauce. The crunch from the peppers added texture. The cheese rounded out the bite with a savory component. It was excellent. Next I've had the Goat Cheese stuffed dates. The cheese was coated in pistachios and dates that were drizzled with honey. This was almost dessert like. Very good. It paired well the NEIPA's they have been making.
One of the first things you notice in the food area is the large pizza oven. You can see inside the oven and they have wood burning in it. I had to try a pie. They have red or white pizzas to choose from. They are all 12 inch. I swore I wasn't going to eat the whole darn thing. But I did. I got a chorizo pizza that came with large chunks of homemade chorizo, roasted red pepper, and olives. The red sauce was a bit tangy and sweet at the same time. The crust was thin and perfectly cooked. Slight crunch to the exterior with a tender interior.
Their food menu consists of sharables (appetizers), pizza or salad. That's it. But what I have had has all been excellent. I'm a big fan of Masthead and what they are doing. Whether you want to try a sampler of 4 beers or just grab a pint and some delicious food, this is the place.
