  • The few negative reviews prove that you can never please everyone. One such reviewer even said she "just doesn't like bbq" and still felt compelled to leave a negative comment! A friend recently introduced me to the Hammered Hog. I am an amateur chef and I have my own smoker. I "double smoke" (two smoke sources) my own pork shoulders. Hammered Hog's is still better. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the pulled pork is infused with wonderful smoke flavor and so tender it melts in your mouth. Slathered with barbecue sauce, it is out of this world to any barbecue afficionado. The pulled chicken is almost as good. The onion rings are crispy and large...and the onions fresh and sweet. Not everyone likes collard greens but, if you do, you should love these. They are the best I've ever eaten anywhere. I've partaken of the "free" breakfast offered on the weekends. These require that you purchave any large non-alcoholic drink. I bought a Diet Coke for $2.50 and got a great breakfast consisting of hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, toast with butter, and about three slices of bacon. The hashbrowns were perfectly cooked...not too soft and not too crisp. And it's not small portions, either. Not sure how long they can continue to do this! For decades Honey Bears has been my favorite barbecue joint. I've driven miles for a "fix" of pulled pork and collard greens. Unfortunately, the original location has gone downhill and even the Central Avenue location doesn't seem as good as it once was. The Hammered Hog is closer and, I'm sorry to say, better than Honey Bears. This is my new "go to" place for barbecue. Footnote: There's no such REAL word spelled "barbeque" which would be pronounced "barbeck." The proper spelling is "barbecue." Yes, I know that some dictionaries will carry "creative" spellings once enough people use them, but that does not make them correct.
