| - While I have had great experiences in the past with coloring, particularly with Colton who is fantastic, and got a great cut from Shari in the past, I found that Isle of You is not the best place in the area to go for a basic styling. Up until now I was a semi-regular customer. I returned to Shari recently after a long hiatus and I asked for a basic trim and to get some curls and volume that would last until the evening for a wedding I was going to. I was very disappointed in the amount of effort Shari put in to my hair compared to the amount that I paid. She did a dry trim on me which was what I asked for, and that was fine. But she did the absolute bare minimum of curling my hair. Quite frankly I thought I could have done better, which is saying something because I made a point to go get it done at a salon as opposed to doing it myself for a reason.
I have very straight, fine hair so curls are something my hair just doesn't want to do. In the past when I was not able to get an appointment with Isle of You due to myself needing my hair done last minute (which I don't blame Isle of You for), I had gone to be a walk-in at Dean of Shadyside instead for a basic curled style, and for $15 dollars they curled it up in a FANTASTIC style that had volume and bounce that lasted into the next day. It looked straight out of a magazine and I got a lot of complements for it. So I know that it IS possible for my hair to be curled and have some lasting power.
However Shari spent maybe 15 minutes curling my hair, and even though I specifically asked for big curls and volume, I did not get what I asked for. My hair was slightly curled on the bottom and completely flat on top. When she was done, I had to ask for her to tease it up which she did very half-heartedly. She told me to refrain from combing the curls out until I got to the event and to use some pocket hair spray to keep its shape. I did both of these things and the curls were flat by the time I got to the wedding anyway. She kept warning me that my hair is too straight and that the humidity would make curls hard, but I feel that a professional should be able to work within those parameters without problem, because I know they have done so in the past. I felt that if she had used a better curling iron and had spent the time to work on my hair and teased and styled it with volume in mind, as I had stated I wanted more than once, she could have accomplished a much better look. All together with my dry trim, styling, and purchase of the pocket hair spray, my total was $60. Seeing as the hair spray was $5, a barber trim is $15 and hot tool finish is listed between $20-$35 on their website, I assume I was charged the maximum amount for a hot tool finish, and I just don't think this was justified. Why should I pay $35 for a lame, minimum effort style when I can go to Dean and get a professional-looking style for $15? Or if I want a super-basic lower half curl with minimum tease, why shouldn't I just do it myself for free?
Isle of You specialized in color and I do think they excel in that area. But don't bother going for other, more basic services.
