| - The following is the prices and sales pitch I was given:
-18/hr range fee, which I knew already. I was OK with this because I would have shared it with a friend for an additional $9, we were only looking to shoot 1 hour anyways. The SAME price as First Strike, our initial range of interest. The difference is, at First Strike, you can stay as LONG as you like! This is HUGE when working on skills and time and cost factor in. I will often spend 2 hours on one skill, after all, this is how you become an effective and responsible shooter.
-A $5 yearly fee-this was pitched to me as a cautionary/insurance liability "because we offer bullet proof windows and stalls". Up to this point, I was OK with the additional $5 a year, I just thought that the sales pitch was lacking and poor marketing. They were passing the cost of liability to the shooter and in REALITY, you are paying to protect them in the event of a law suit at the same time selling a false security to the shooter, as if Unintentional discharge is PREVENTED and that you are SAFE for the additional $5. This began rubbing me the wrong way but I was OK with it. Mentor probably needed the business to carry steep insurance.
-$3 fee for shooting the cardboard frame which was app. 8"x14"-it was the backing in which you place your targets on. Usually ranges have FULL cardboard backers and CHARGE $0. You can even take them home after shooting in most ranges. This little bit of information subtly mentioned really GOT TO ME and here is WHY.
I was told that this FEE was to prevent you from getting CLOSE to the metal hanger that holds the cardboard which secures the targets. So in other words, if you shoot near the cardboard (which for most beginner shooters is NOT hard to do), your $3 FEE is to somehow prevent you from accidentally shooting the metal hanger. So in other words, you PAY for NOT hitting the metal hanger. Pretty genius and I'm sure lucrative. Look, I have NEVER been to a range in my 25 years of shooting where you PAID for shooting the backer cardboard. NEVER. This was clearly a way to reign in the $$ for beginner shooters AGAIN with using fear as a sales business plan.
As I end my review, I DO want to mention that I am pleased to see more gun ranges open in the area. There are all sorts of insurance and limits to a gun range including cost of disposal, which is costly, but the marketing and FEE's that seemed to mount were poorly marketed. How about first time shooting in the range pays $20/1.5 hour including Liability wavier? Now that would have not rubbed me the wrong way. The business needs to look at how they sell their services in an area already established with ranges which are much more inexpensive and without the additional FEEs.
Unfortunately, I will not enter in Point Blank again and its not because of hourly range cost but rather the games played with words to squeeze a few dollars more for cardboard and insurance, which protects them and penalizes the beginner shooter. I mean, after all, if you shoot the cardboard and NOT the metal hangers, that is good no?
Pass on this one guys and gals. Look to First Strike and Atwells for all your gun and range needs.
