I really love this place when I catch it on a good night. When I'm downtown and dressed casually, I usually go to Container Park or Goldspike. But when I feel like getting dressed up and cute, I head to Commonwealth (even though it's not required and plenty of people are dressed casual).
I usually hang out downstairs where there are intimate set tables and couches. The upstairs terrace portion has another bar, large sectioned off tables, and room for dancing. But I avoid that area because I don't have the patience for the typical drunk, loud, and dancing all over the place crowd. I'm sooo over the "turn down for what!?!" fever. I save my "turn-up" for the large club's on the strip where it's more appropriate, expected, and accommodated. Bars and lounges like this one are too small for that jumping all over the place and acting a drunken fool antics. Yes you can dance and be merry, but this isn't a nightclub like Surrender so reel it in a bit and learn dance in one place.
To me, the Project Downtown establishments is more about social maturity, responsible drinking, and conversation/connections with friends and new people. You don't have to be a raging drunk to enjoy the nightlife.
Anyway, I like the quirky decor (love the artistic portraits) and intimate lighting. The jumbo "Wonderland" chairs are my favorite to sit in (reminds me of Alice in Wonderland!). THE CHANDELIERS ARE EVERTHING!! Very nice touch to the atmosphere! I love relaxing and having intimate light hearted conversations at Commonwealth.
There are different nights aimed with different music genres, live dj, or musicians, so the crowd changes or is mixed. One day the crown is mature and classic, other times it's filled with 40 year olds, and other times it's hipsters mixed with hip hoppers/pop, or a random crowd you can't define. One time I caught the live entertainment downstairs, which was a nice twist, but super "hipster". You just have to learn the the nights with specific crowds and adjust accordingly for your comfort.
Seating can be a pain to get during peak hours, especially if you're in a group (unless you reserve a table upstairs, but sometimes it's closed up there), so you have to become a vulture and be on the hunt for potential seats. Watch out for the stuck up divas wearing basic louboutin's if you're trying to grab a seat near them. They have sharp acrylic stiletto shaped nails, so don't get too close, lol!
The drinks are well made and have awesome drink recipes, but ever since I stopped drinking hard liquor my options are severely limited. They barely have two different wine selections, so that's a bummer for me. Prices are typical to Vegas (overpriced $$$), but a teeny bit cheaper than the strip.
Commonwealth was the first establishment I visited for Project Downtown. I had not been downtown since I was a teenager and never knew that it could be so much fun. I rarely ever go to the strip anymore for nightlife entertainment, especially after visiting Commonwealth.

This is a must try location. The decor alone is impressive for a downtown bar and the staff is quite nice. Awesome drink recipes that are good and priced typical to Vegas bars (limited wine selection). They usually have specials on drinks too. Check out the upstairs terrace area, if open to patrons, where there is another bar and music to dance to. They have sections with large tables to accommodate large groups. Go on the side of the terrace to escape the bar/dance area and have a seat for more of an intimate less crowded feel. Offers live dj's and musicians on occasional night and specific times.
There is no other establishment in the vicinity with the style and decor (gorgeous chandeliers) of Commonwealth, so it's worth a try.
Pay attention: there's a speakeasy hidden within... ;) if your lucky, you'll get a tip on how to make a reservation for entry.
