| - I had previously heard great things about Dr. Rahnema at Valley Endocrinology, and thus went through the process of receiving a referral and appointment. My appointment was scheduled a month out, and I got an appointment time that fit my schedule (not always easy to do). The day before the appointment, however, I received a call informing me that the doctor would be leaving early on my appointment day, so I had to go in at 7:00 in the morning instead. Fine.
My actual experience at the office, however, ended before I even met the doctor. I have a unique situation in that I am a Type 1 diabetic and also struggle with eating disorders. These combined situations have, in the past, greatly threatened my health, so it's important to me to have a doctor who is understanding of my individual situation.
One way that I have handled this in the past is by avoiding scales. Every other doctor in my life, from my general care practitioner to other endocrinologists, have always, *always* been understanding of that (it's actually common for eating disorder patients to request not using a scale). It has greatly helped me in the past, as scales are a huge trigger for me.
Dr. Rahnema's nurse, however, informed me that I would have to use the scale. I explained my situation, but she didn't care. I asked to speak to the doctor about it, but the nurse said she would ask for me while I waited. Apparently, the doctor didn't care either, as, for the first time in my life, I was informed that weighing in would be mandatory. I do understand that doctors have varying policies for various reasons, but I also expect that a doctor of mine would at least meet with me to understand my individual situation before demanding a violation of a heavy personal boundary.
I left because I was not at all confident that Dr. Rahnema would work in the best interest of my personal condition, nor that she would work *with* me in managing it. As I said, all other endocrinologists I've ever had have been understanding about the scale issue, but this doctor had no interest in even entertaining the possibility of making a policy exception to meet a patient's needs.
I made another appointment with a different office, who assured me that my personal needs would definitely outweigh the necessity of a scale number.
If you want an endocrinologist who values your input, individual situation, and personal boundaries, I definitely do *not* recommend Dr. Rahnema at Valley Endocrinology. Her policies will outweigh your individual needs. I left feeling helpless and like my concerns meant *nothing* to someone who was about to be my doctor.
