  • This is a great spot to go for birthday parties, bachelor / bachelorette parties, or if you and your friends are on a first name basis at the local karaoke place and need to switch up your routine a little. I came here for a surprise birthday party at the recommendation of a friend. The game is a fun little adventure where you find clues and try to solve "The Case of the Book Club Killer" before the serial killer comes to get you and your group. You don't even have to read the book! We escaped just in the knick of time when we finally figured out the last clue and got the door open (okay, it was actually Andrew G. who figured it out, but whatever). We had a group of 12, plus a woman named Olga who was randomly there to play with us too. I don't know if she bought a ticket in advance or what, but one person in our party had forgotten to, so maybe that's how that happened? I'm not sure how to resolve situations like this, but the business should probably have a policy, since you all play the same game together and it did make it ever so slightly awkward. We were all thinking, "Who knows Olga? Someone must know Olga. Otherwise, why would Olga want to be here?" For this game, I recommend going with a group of 8 for ideal game play. That way, there will be enough clues and puzzles for everyone to have something to do. 13 was slightly crowded and there were a few moments where I felt like I was just twiddling my thumbs, but for the most part, it was exciting. There are no walk-in games, you do need to purchase tickets in advance. The space is near Summerhill Station, right on Yonge St. Look for the little hobbit door south of Boxcar Social. There's only one room escape game to the space at a time, so once you play, you'll need to wait for them to change the game to play again. I had, for some reason, imagined room escape places to be like a karaoke bar with all these little private rooms. I don't know why. My only criticism of this game was that the depiction of women characters in The Book Club Killer game, specifically some imagery in the room/poster and the newscaster for the clip at the end of the game were all a bit... lusty. The newscaster's clothing were more Naked News than NBC, not that you really need to suspend disbelief, but it was something we all noticed. Such imagery is sadly rather common in comic books and board games, even though these mediums are not gender specific and attract a lot of women players and readers. It does make me feel a bit uncomfortable, like this game maybe isn't meant "for" me. I'm hoping a gender and sexual orientation neutral experience will be taken into consideration for the development of the next game, because, it was fun! Update: I received a thoughtful response from the owner about the depictions of women in the game that I'd like to acknowledge. I'd also like to acknowledge that speaking out about this issue got me trolled by an MRA loser type that could barely spell. Yelp, per the usual, gave a very weak "just block him" response to my harassment complaint. That really isn't good enough, Yelp. We march onward.
