| - All hail Yogurty's!
This is seriously the best yogurt in the Annex. I know, lofty claims for a place that's home to Menchies and YoYos!
I first saw this place while I was walking down towards Bathurst on Bloor. Nursing a hangover, I was heading to get a sandwich and decided nothing would do me but to get a cup of tea at Timmy's. But hold the phone, Tim's is gone?! No more Bathurst and Bloor location? I was bummed beyond reasonable belief (seriously, I had been to this location once before and all they had were stale bran muffins -- why was I so sad!? Because I was hungover, that's why). Then I saw that it was being replaced by a yogurt shop (literally just a few doors away from Menchies) and I practically lost it. We don't need another yogurt shop! Canada needs more Tim Hortons! OBVIOUSLY!
I went home and looked up this "Yogurty's" place on the internet, fully sure that it was some independent sucker that was going to be put out of business by Menchies. That'll teach them for moving in on a Tim's spot! When I saw that it was 'the original inventor of self-serve frozen yogurt' (open since 1987), I scoffed. "YOU?! I don't even KNOW YOU." I was 100% sure that I would absolutely hate this place.
Six weeks later, Yogurty's is open and I want to cry. I want to cry beautiful tears seasoned with frosted animal crackers, cereal, and FRESHLY MADE WAFFLES (not waffle cones, actual waffles as a topping). If you're wondering about the kind of consistency of this yogurt, I would put it on par with YoYo's when it comes to creaminess. It's skips that icy "we swear this is yogurt" feel that Menchies has going on and actually tastes like real yogurt. This is also the first yogurt place that has decent chocolate yogurt in my opinion. Menchies' has that weird, dirty rainwater taste to it (I don't know either, okay). Their tart is out of this world, too. Flavours that I spotted while there today included: Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, banana, peanut butter chocolate, wafer cone, tart, dulce de leche, coffee, tiramisu, red velvet, cotton candy, root beer, and white chocolate explosion. There are three more (for a total of sixteen separate flavours plus eight swirls) but I don't remember them. The calories for each flavour are posted on the machines and I don't think I saw any that were over 50 calories per ounce. We tried every flavour and there wasn't a single one we didn't like.
Toppingswise, there's more than what you get at Menchies. Lots of different kinds of chocolate and cereals, as well as fruit, yogurt covered raisins/peanuts, a ton of candy, and some unusual ones like frosted animal crackers and freshly made baby waffles (hockey puck sized). As far as price goes, I think it was 55 cents per ounce, which is in line with what Menchies and YoYo's are charging.
This was an absolutely flawless yogurt experience. I want to complain about something (I love to complain), but I honestly can't. I left feeling all floaty-happy and thanked every single person on the way out. I may also have said loudly, "This is the best yogurt in the Annex" and "I don't want to leave." Also, while my boyfriend and I were sitting eating, two boys came in and we overheard one (who said had no money) sighing to his friend, "This is every kid's dream, dude." It so totally is.
