This is old school food in an old school building. You can almost glimpse the Phoenix of days gone by and it kind of makes you feel good to know something has withstood the test of time and the rush to make corporate eateries seem small time local (Postinos, the Yard etc.) This place is small time local and you can tell from the food and service.
Key things to note:
Menu is heavy southern fare - so come hungry
Entrees are $13-15 including 2 sides
Sandwiches are around $6 and have one side
No alcohol
Credit cards accepted
You follow the golden rule and honestly report what you ordered when you pay
They close at 7pm
My friend and I opted for sitting at the counter. Only complaint is the chairs were horribly uncomfortable. Being closer to the kitchen and staff you could see this is a family place and everyone takes care of each other. Staff was very pleasant. Bridget took good care of us.
Both our main dishes were delicious. One catfish and one fried chicken. The green beans were good as was the mixed greens.
I read some of the bad reviews on this place and most seem unfair or specific to one encounter. Do not go into this place expecting glitz or a modern slick feel that so many "hip" restaurants in Phoenix have of late. This is a family run establishment that serves old fashioned food. Respect who they are and what they are doing and you'll have a good experience. If not, go wait 3 hours for a pizza at Bianco's down the road.
