L'Express was recommended to us by a friend who used to live in Montreal as having amazing French food. We therefore made a reservation late one night (as they were completely booked until 8/8:30).
At the entrance, we noticed an overflowing coat rack and checked in with the host. There is hardly any room to wait, but there were a few other groups waiting in the tiny space since no one wanted to wait outside in the cold.
We waited. And waited. The host apologized, saying there was a mix up. About 20 minutes after we had arrived (on time for our reservation), the host asked us to sit at the bar and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. I can't say no to free wine.
The bartender was friendly and poured us glasses of our preferences. About 10 minutes later we were seated. We were given complimentary bread and a jar of pickles. I love pickles! Definitely a plus! I ordered the bone marrow and the ravioli. Both were delicious. I had a bite of my friend's risotto, which was also very delicious.
The menu was in French and the waiter seemed to be more confident in French. It was definitely a nice dinner, and not too fancy to feel awkward or pretentious. The restaurant front is a bit unassuming and I heard people who were passing by say this was the best French restaurant in montreal. I thought it was great!
