| - Had a weird experience coming here for happy hour with coworkers. The manager redeemed it in the end, but it was still quite off-putting.
We had a group of about 20 people from work, who were going out as a farewell to one of our colleagues. Someone in our party had called Olive & Ivy the week before to ask if we could make a reservation since we had a large group. She was told that they don't take reservations for happy hour, but that since we'd be coming in on a Tuesday, it shouldn't be any problem to seat our whole group. Sounded great.
Our group arrived, and there was only enough "happy hour" seating available for about half of our group... despite the fact that there were many other open tables throughout the restaurant. Half of our group sat, while the other half tried to figure out what to do. Finally we asked about taking one of the other nearby tables that was empty (unfortunately not next to the rest of the group), and we were told we could sit there. The stray half of our group sat down, the server brought us water, and then left. She came back, dropped off an appetizer that our boss had bought for us, and then told us "I can't have you guys sitting here. We have to leave these tables open for dinner service. I'm gonna need to have you clear out of here by 5." (It was 4:45.) So we asked "Do you have another table we can go to? We were told we could sit here." She said there were no other tables we could move to, since the rest of the "happy hour" section was full. Mind you, most of the group was going to order non-happy-hour food.
The server walked away. Our half of the group (still removed from the rest of coworkers, including our departing friend who the whole outing was for) was left to figure out what to do. Honestly, we didn't really have any options... there was nowhere we were "allowed" to sit, so they were essentially just kicking us out of the restaurant even though we were ready to be paying customers. We hadn't even had the chance to order a drink. It was very awkward and rude.
As we were about to leave, a manager suddenly came over and told us he had made space for us in the happy hour section next to the rest of our group. We were immediately seated in that section, and were finally treated like normal customers. We enjoyed ourselves from that point on, but none of us could believe how poorly the situation was handled up until then.
The food and drinks were good, not great. I gave this place 3 stars instead of 2 only because the manager handled things right. It's just a shame it took so long for that to happen. This was my first time at Olive & Ivy, and I definitely wouldn't come here again by my own choice.
