  • After hiking Cathedral Rock earlier in the day, I wanted to continue exploring the trails in the Mt Charleston area. Asked the ranger for some easy, low elevation recommendations and she mentioned fletcher. Said it brings you through slot canyons, which sounded awesome, with some shade, and different from Cathedral Rock. it's not an uphill slog like Cathedral rock, but it's not flat either. There is a slight elevation climb. the sun is super hot in the first half of the trail. But the terrain is pretty. It's a rocky/gravelly terrain, & there's some shade at semi regular intervals along the trail. Even though I started at 12:30pm (I do not recommend this, start earlier for the cool & shade!), there were plenty of other people and their dogs. Once you feel tired and kinda bored, maybe a 1.2 miles in or so, you get to the interesting parts of the trail. The trail forks off and I took the trail on the left. Its pretty steep initially, with some slippery gravel. There's more tree coverage here, mostly pine, and you also get some awesome views of a pretty large cave. Then you actually reach the slot canyons and it's gorgeous!! There's much more shade here, around 1pm we were in shade almost the entire time. However, the slot canyon portion is tricky ish footing wise bc you have to be careful to not slip in some parts. So if you're older, need walking aids, etc, this might not be the best trail for you. Also, the estimates weren't very accurate as it was 2.2 miles to reach the end of the trail (which I'm counting as the water spout). Overall, a very cool hike taking you through canyons and ending at a natural water spout (that's dry this time of year). If you're looking for views though, I'd recommend Cathedral Rock.
