rev:text	For a few years now, I had been wanting to attend Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden and this last holiday season my husband and I finally bought tickets for the Sunday after Christmas. What I learned is that this would have been a fun event to go to if the weather was a little nicer and if we had eaten somewhere else first. Unfortunately the night we went ended up being incredibly cold and so we had to bundle up. They did have some gas heaters scattered about but not nearly enough and not all of them were working. I didn't quite know what to expect but the garden looked lovely at sunset as we arrived. We had to park really far away but I had on comfy shoes so that was not a big issue. It is the garden so you know going in that you need to be prepared to walk. My husband and I grew up southern Arizona and I have attended the luminarias in Tubac many times. They do theirs more like posadas where each stop hands out free cookies, snacks and warm drinks so I guess I was expecting some of that at DBG. There were a couple of spots selling snacks and drinks (for a pretty penny) but nothing like that is included in the ticket price. We were both hungry so we ended up buying tickets for the buffet dinner which surprisingly cost more than the tickets to the event itself. The hall where the dinner was served was freezing cold and so the food was cold as well. Even if had been properly kept warm, I still don't think I would have enjoyed the food. I had some gnocchi that tasted like it had come out of a box, some boring tasteless chicken and a wilted salad. Yuck! They did offer hot chocolate in here but it was very watered down and again not kept hot. For dessert I tried the tres leches cake which was not at all what I would call tres leches. Basically just sponge cake (again packaged and artificial) with some whipped creme and coconut. Even though the food underwhelmed, the musical performances were awesome. Now I know that this is the reason people come to luminarias; it is because of the music. We saw an awesome string quartet performing traditional holiday carols and then another trio doing more modern music. After that we went to watch the hand bell choir. Since that was indoors we thought we could warm up but inexplicably there were no heaters in the room. Anyway all the musical groups were very talented and impressive and we would have stayed longer if it hadn't been such a cold night. Of course, that is rare in Phoenix so I am sure in other years it would have been fine. I would consider attending Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden but I would just be sure to eat dinner first so that I can avoid overpaying for terrible food. Other than the huge disappointment of the buffet dinner we had a good time.
