| - I went in for an ear ache/soar throat/tonsil swelling. (To mention I am a 26yr old female with unnatural hair and tattoos I don't fit the norm for some, and I feel that affected the way I was treated at my visit) Dr. Allison Kaplan walked in made a comment about my hair then proceeded to ask me about my cigarette habit/alcohol intake. (Which I put down in my new patient form) The first 20 minutes were spent being judged and lectured about my personal choices (yes I am aware of how these affect my health, I feel as though I'm on a normal level for a 26yr old single childless woman for this day and age.. Which shouldn't matter either way) she asked if my personal life and career are affected by said things and if I wanted a counselor to call me daily to quit smoking among many other questions. After 20 minutes of that I had to interrupt her and ask if we could proceed with why I'm here. The next minute was spent with her glancing at my throat and ears while I sat on the chair not on the exam table and then telling me everything is fine. I told her I can't hear out of my left ear and my sinus' are expelling a green mucus I had a problem with strep throat last month. "Everything looks normal, we will do a strep test which we won't get back until tomorrow but I'll write you a script for antibiotics for the strep just in case." I told her I don't want to be on 10 days of antibiotics if its unnecessary, my body doesn't do well with antibiotics. "We will call you tomorrow with results." I asked if I should take sudafed or gargle with salt water, pretty much asking for any medical advice on how to treat my symptoms. Her answer with a shrug of the shoulder "sure, if you'd like." As I walked out she patted me on the back and said "quit smoking and drinking, your immune system will be healthier." (To mention I get sick once a year in winter, this is abnormal) reading the other reviews it seems that she would rather be a counselor/life coach instead of a medical professional while putting her own beliefs and judgments aside.
I left very upset without any answers.
I went to another physician this morning (next day) explained everything the same including my personal choices/medical history... no judgment, no counseling, no lecture. (fluid in my ears, drainage in my sinus which is causing swollen irritated tonsils and throat. Strep test with results in a minute, negative.. which ruled that out, so 10 days of antibiotics is very unnecessary. Left with medical advice and scripts to treat my symptoms.) which made me feel better because with my visit yesterday I was told everything looks fine. I'm very glad I listened to my body and went and got a second opinion.
I would never recommend this office to anyone. I know my personal choices and appearance aren't for everyone, but walking into a professional office for medical advice and treatment... One would think they would put everything aside and help you the best they can. She might as well have looked and me and said I'm sorry I don't want to help you it would have saved me some time.
