| - i've put off a review for Aldi for over a year now... mostly because the first reviewer before me got it pretty much right. first off, Aldi has the best beer ($4 six-pack german lagers), riesling ($4 bottles, excellent stuff) and frozen tilapia (about $2 for 1/2 lb) at these prices in town. second, good mustard, salsa, milk, eggs, juice, dark chocolate, all for about $1 per jar, bottle, carton or whatever they come in. third, the fruit and cheese selection is not bad at all.
sure, this isn't a general-purpose grocery store. but it's hard not to find about 60% of everything you need for a grand total of $35 per trip, including the booze. i would not buy the chicken or beef at Aldi, since there are better quality selections around town. but if you avoid that (and maybe a few other things) it's hard not to love this place.
finally, this is the only store i know of in town that (a) charges a refundable quarter for every shopping cart, and (b) charges a few dimes for every plastic bag. eventually, i learned to stow a few canvas bags in my trunk... and there, without even realizing it until now, Aldi has made me a better person.
