  • My husband and I recently hiked the Gold Strike Canyon with our friends. It took us almost 3 hours to the river. Then, 2 hours back. That includes rest, photo opps and waiting (on some descending and climbing points). It was challenging and we got body aches the following day, but the scenery and experience were definitely worthwhile! :) GETTING THERE: *From Vegas, go on I-93. *Take Exit 2. *Turn right towards the unpaved road. *Make a quick left. *There are parallel parking spaces on both sides of the unpaved road, right before the mouth of the trail. TRAVEL TIME: 45 minutes to 1 hour (from Vegas) NOTE: *The GPS was misleading. It directed our friends all the way through the Hoover Dam and might have gone further to Arizona if they continued on. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: It's strenuous but achievable. If you're a beginner, it's probably best to go with experienced hikers or physically fit buddies. A happy bunch of friends will make it fun and bearable, too. :) There were 5 rappelling/rope-climbing points. One of them had 3 ropes to utilize. Anticipate many big boulders to climb and slide from. They are very slippery even when dry so gear up with appropriate shoes and clothes. Some might look easy but don't underestimate. Consider finding alternate routes to get through some of the boulders. Check either sides as easier ways may be hidden behind the rocks. Also, watch out for holes. Expect your shoes to be wet along the way especially near the end. ATTIRE: We were fine with just Nike running shoes but proper hiking shoes could be best. For ladies, you might want to wear durable but breathable leggings/yoga pants to avoid scratches on your legs because some rocks are sharp. I know it's SOP but be reminded to check the weather before you go. MUST-HAVES: At least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person (could be more on a warmer day) Light snacks and sweets Hat Lightweight towel, swimwear, sandals/flip flops (for the hot spring/river) Extra pair of socks Trash bag (please respect the pristine state of the place) Small first aid kit THE REWARD: The prize of nature's goodness awaits for you at the end of the trail. The Colorado River is there to be enjoyed but the hot spring is our favorite. So soothing after the hike! A nice view of the highway/bridge also came as a bonus. #
