  • We've lived in Arizona for more than 30 years, and yet, we'd never gotten around to eating at Durant's. Perhaps it was the conflicting Yelp reviews, ranging from "fabulous food" to "way overpriced," and from "superb service" to "the worst table side service ever experienced." But last weekend, it was my wife's birthday, and we decided that we needed to find out for ourselves what Durant's was all about. Walking in through the kitchen instantly reminded me of the film Goodfellas (but far less intimidating). We had made reservations for the dining room (although you can also dine in their bar room), and upon arrival were promptly seated in a terrifically cozy booth. Our waiter, "Jet," was inspirational. He is the kind of person who genuinely wants you to have a great experience at Durant's, not just enjoy the sumptuous food. Taking stock of our surroundings, I felt like we had traveled in a time machine. The understated 40's style decor featured deep leather booths, dark, slightly masculine wallpaper studded with photographs of the owners, their dog, a smattering of well known celebrities, and of course, several picturesque nods to the Rat Pack. This was a restaurant Frank Sinatra would have blessed. Durant's is the real deal, the way steakhouses used to be, serving up sizzling platters of perfectly broiled beef and cold Martinis. We chose the prime rib, cut thin (English style so that we savor the salty, beefy flavor of the meat). It was superb, on par with Lawrey's in Beverly Hills and Chiacgo. Surprisingly, the entrees included salad or soup, potatoes prepared in various styles, and a gorgeous loaf of bread smothered in mushrooms, garlic and butter. The martinis were big and ice cold. And because it was my wife's birthday, Durant's invited her to order any desert on the menu, complimentary. Nice touch! She chose the Creme Brûlée trio, which was fantastic. Even with 2 cocktails and coffee, our bill was under $100. On the drive home we talked about returning to Durant's to sample their lunch menu in their beautiful bar (very romantic). If you are reading this Yelp review, and you have never been to Durant's, then by all means, go there. You won't be disappointed.
