  • So as a cosplayer and geek I have to admit we don't have a lot of places in the valley to get down with our geeky selves and cosplay outside of Comic Cons. When I heard about the Nerd a new geeky themed cosplay bar; a friend and I had to give it a try in the hopes that we could add it to the geeky list of great things to do in Vegas. Let me say I was extremely and I mean extremely disappointed in this place. This place is more of a place for people who aren't geeks to come and pretend that they are geeks. When we arrived at the door we were told that the bouncer needed to check our IDs (which is to be expected) however the bouncer was more preoccupied with his conversation that he didn't even bother giving us a glance. After waiting for a good 10 minutes we got our IDs checked and headed into the bar. When we got inside we were greeted by bartenders and servers dressed in the most stereotypical nerd outfits you could think of and frankly it was quite insulting and offensive. Geeks don't walk around dressed like Steve Urkel with glasses taped at the bridge, pants pulled up too high, and suspenders; however that's how every single bartender was dressed. The only real thing geeky about this bar is the giant Jabba The Hutt and some geeky stuff around the place like a life size Keenser from the JJ Abrams Star Trek films. Most of the memorabilia wasn't so much geek related (like star wars, star trek, comic books, etc) as it was just pop culture stuff like the hood of the Death Proof car or a Breaking Bad hazmat suit. The service was absolutely awful and the wait time for a bartender to get your drink order was atrocious, plus if you even managed the miracle of ordering a drink good luck actually getting it since the bartenders could barely even remember a simple Rum and Coke. The bartenders were quite rude and treating the bar like a common club which to be honest is pretty much exactly what The Nerd is. The cosplay also isn't so much cosplay as it is just a bunch of frat boys and sorority girls who went to Party City and bought a 15 dollar Slave Leia bikini or Darth Vader mask and called it cosplay. The club (which is what it is) was extremely loud and dark with very little room for conversation or meeting people. In fact if they had marketed it as maybe a Star Wars nightclub (like the club seen in Attack of the Clones) it might be a pretty cool joint but as of right now it's just a very typical strip style nightclub with little to nothing to do with geek culture or cosplay. Honestly this place is very and I mean very disappointing and I will not be returning. I really felt unwelcome and felt as though the Nerd was mocking cosplayers and geek culture with their taped up glasses and suspenders rather than trying to be part of the geek community. I really hope the Nerd tries to fix up their game because honestly my experience with this place was so disheartening the the odds I will ever come back are slim to never.
