  • I think this has to be my favorite concert venue in Pittsburgh. There aren't a whole lot of places to see the more indie/underground shows - as most of the bands I listen to won't book Stage AE or Consol, for example. This was my second time seeing a show at Mr. Small's and it's changed quite a bit. My first experience (Bouncing Souls/Tim Barry) was fine - a big, old church with a large stage and great sound. I didn't venture too far away from the stage, so honestly, I can't remember if there was such a large bar then or not. They definitely didn't have food! Last night was my second visit to Mr. Small's (Lucero) and the first thing I noticed was that while standing in line, they now have a covered outdoor area with a food stand serving up all sorts of hot, fresh-cooked goodies plus cold water and soda. An over-21 outdoor deck has also been added where they serve drinks at a lower cost than inside the venue itself. Inside, they have a large, fully-stocked bar in the back and also upstairs in the 'choir' area. Another grill/griddle is inside and they were cooking up food all night! I didn't partake, but could smell delicious things, like sautéed mushrooms and BBQ. We arrived fairly early and just wanting to relax, headed upstairs to the 'choir'. This area is divided up into 3 or 4 sections with seating and a 'countertop' to place your drinks/food. Each section is closed off with a privacy curtain. We got very lucky and ended up being the only two people in that section. Soon after sitting down, we were offered drinks and napkins were placed under our cans of Coke. He introduced himself as Derrick and was super-attentive all night! He checked on us many times, bringing us ice water (without asking), taking drink orders, etc. Total VIP treatment - at a punk-rock show! This 30-something can get used to this! Let the kids sweat it out on the floor!
