| - The Lake Norman area offers everything I need without the traffic and hassle of downtown Charlotte, but there has always been one thing missing from this area to keep me from commuting to South Charlotte, and that's a great local craft beer store. Well thanks to new owner John Baker that has finally changed with his recent addition of the Davidson Beverage Company off Main Street near Campania and Fuel Pizza towards downtown Davidson.
Prepare to be pleasantly surprised the first time you walk in, not only are the shelves and coolers stocked with rare imports, domestics, wine, kegs, and even growlers from local NC breweries, but it also has its very own bar. Six taps rotating out weekly, always pouring new or seasonal craft brewed magic. This place has only been open for around a month, but I have already had tap offerings from such brewers as Thomas Creek, Nantahala, Sweetwater, Green Man, Southern Tier, and Ass Clown Brewery to name a few. In addition to the bar, he has also fashioned a small living room area in between the coolers and the bar with a couch and a couple of chairs. This is great if you find yourself on the fence about a 6 pack of brew you have never heard of, just grab a loose cold one from the coolers, crack it open, have a seat, kick back and see what your palate feels all while perusing back issues of Beer Advocate from the coffee table. I just did that very thing with Hell or High Watermelon last week. The cold single beers average around $2 to $2.50, which beats any craft beer prices you would find at your local bar or restaurant. Throw in a big screen TV, popcorn machine, Restaurant X catering menu (Buffalo Bleu Cheese Chips are a must), monthly beer tasting events, corn hole boards, and a wiener dog named Deeney who greets you at the front door, and you have one of the coolest and most unique new hangouts in the Charlotte area.
I also suggest you follow the store's Facebook page, but like me you may find yourself making impulsive beer runs as he updates almost daily his latest offerings, tap change outs, beer tastings, or upgrades to the store so you're always in the know when a seasonal or rare beer pops up. I just recently discovered he now carries Theakston's Old Peculier, a beer before his shop opened I could only find on the web.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this new spot, because for me it's all about trying something new I've never heard of and hoping it's that next great beer that I can then recommend to my friends. Thanks for finally bringing this type of selection to my neck of the woods.
Cheers to the dbc!!!
