  • What others have said, the overseers of these animals are not executing their responsibilities in a professional or rational manner. Somehow they get some good volunteers that are very sweet, though one volunteer recently posted a review earlier this month exposing some of their problems. My experience: 1. went to visit the place, no signage, stumbled around the complex somehow found my way to a door without any signs, boldly opened door, by pure luck I to where they got the kitties. I thought: these folks don't care about potential adopters very much. 2. Volunteer says to me I can't pick up, pet, play with, or inspect the potential pet to be adopted because recently someone liked one of their animals, and during the interview with the director, got angry at some of the questions asked, and verbally abused the director ...so no more anyone get near a pet to be adopted. What?? make no sense, that. By the way, the volunteers (risking the ire of the directors for sure) did let me play with the kitties, breaking rules meant to be broken. Good volunteers, though may be out of a job if directors read this review. Very sad. Not so sad though, because many respectable and lovely pet placement centers they can volunteer at and as workers get the respect they deserve. 3. I shared with the volunteers the story of my current pet situation; who does not want to tell their pet stories when talking to a pet expert or otherwise interested party? I told them of an inter-cat conflict, and that several pet behavioral experts recommended I re-home one of the cats who was neurologically impaired. They also told me it is part of their nature as cats for the strong/healthy to prey/act aggressively upon/toward the impaired/sick. 4. Filled out an application. Questions intrusive and strange, particularly the last question trying to find out how much money you would be willing to spend if/when your cat gets really sick. 5. As I was leaving, sweet volunteer handing me the kittie to pet one last time, she said she saw that kittie born 6 months earlier, said the director would call me in a couple days. 6. On my way home, I had a feeling they would not be calling me in a couple days, which they did not, because it seemed to me that they are looking for purrfection, like the millionairess five or so years ago that left entire fortune to her beloved cat. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/12/woman-leaves-13m-fortune-to-pet-cat/ I thought that the story I told the volunteers of the inter-cat conflict about a year ago would somehow be a problem, and disqualify my application. Based on my cat like intuition, I decided to go ahead and look around some more, and found another kitten that I was able to adopt at a different more respectful and responsible shelter in the valley. I was surprised when they actually did call me a week after the fact, telling me what my intuition had told me, that they had disqualified me because of the story the volunteer told them about the story I had told the volunteer about an inter-cat conflict in my home a year ago. By this time, of course, I had already homed the new Kitten. While ABC had branded my older cat a troublemaker, within three days was best friends with the new kittie after earning each other's trust. You gotta love a happy ending...just don't waste your time with the ABC (though we gotta get those cats outta that place). My advice, if for some reason you do happen by their place (and somehow without signage find your way to the place to view the kitties -- no touching though!)-- do not tell anyone anything about your history with animals, just say anything else, simple, positive, no TMI, This is like a formal job interview (I was told with a home visit prior to the adoption to be sure you are you).
