  • Joshua Tree is not the only trad climber's paradise. Red Rock ranks up there as a great place for trad climbing and sport climbing as well. I've been here several times, mostly for climbing. The rating for the climbs vary, so it's doable by many, whether you're a beginner leader or seasoned and experienced climber. The climbs I've done all have an approach, which isn't necessarily easy. In fact, it is downright difficult and confusing(!) since everything looks the same. You have cacti and expansive land and you have cacti and expansive land. Makes you ask yourself, "Didn't I just walk through this?" So, basically, you're getting both an upper and lower body workout...perfect! If you're planning on climbing some of the more popular routes, make sure you get here early to be other parties. As for hiking, there are probably a ton of trails, both off trail and on trail. Can't say that I've done a lot of that here. There are designated trails in the park for those of us who are direction challenged. If you're good with the GPS and taking way points, then this would be heaven. Lots of exploring to do. As a whole, this park is gorgeous! How can you not enjoy the picturesque views of, well, red rocks. The drive through this rock is easy to make and you get a sense of its beauty, but if you really want to get the scope of it all, then you'll need to do some walking.
