| - Nancy B's is located along a street of what look like warehouses, and the bakery looks similarly nondescript except for a sign by the parking lot. The gravel lot is small, but it wraps around the side of the building. For those who are going from the Homestead Grays Bridge by foot, I suggest walking down W 8th Ave then turning onto W 7th Ave since the sidewalk disappears for a bit on 7th. Nancy B's is on the first floor of a house, and climbing up the porch, opening the door, and then unlatching the screen door made me feel like I was entering a home.
The space inside is small, just enough room for a case of delicious goodies and an ATM. The staff were very friendly and proud of their business. I got a chocolate chip cookie for $1.50. Their other cookies are only $.75 each and decently large. The cookie came from the back in a brown paper bag with plenty of napkins--as I was told, a hot cookie not immediately eaten is a cookie gone to waste! Since it was a beautiful day, I enjoyed my cookie on a bench right behind the parking lot on 8th Ave.
And enjoy it I did. The cookie was warm and chewy. My favorite part was the contrast between the crisp exterior and the soft interior. The taste was faintly nutty, and the texture bordered on crumbly, though the cookie split without crumbs. Since the chocolate chips were smaller, there wasn't much of a mess from melted chocolate, but the gooeyness wasn't lost. I was afraid the cookie would be greasy or too sweet, but my fears were unfounded. The cookie could have been better, but I think that's more a matter of personal preference. I love lots of chocolate and chewier cookies.
I will definitely be back for more treats when I have the chance. Unfortunately, their hours make it difficult for someone working a 9-to-5 job to stop by, but if you can find the time, it's worth it!
