  • I received a coupon e-mailed to me from K-Mart's corporate office a few weeks ago for $10 off at K-Mart or Sears....a few brand limitations but otherwise nothing else. My local K-Mart closed a few years ago so I do need to drive a little further than somewhere like Target or Wal-Mart which are a few miles down the road. I decided to drive to this K-Mart which is about 20 minutes away and picked some items I needed, mainly cleaning supplies and nothing listed in the limitations of the coupon. There were only 2 registers open on a Saturday afternoon and I did need to wait for almost 10 minutes in line. My shop your way card was scanned, my items were scanned and upon scanning the coupon, it would not register. My cashier stared in confusion, a second cashier stared in confusion and the store manager Jeff was called in. Jeff stared at the screen for several minutes, then stared at the coupon for several minutes dumbfounded. Have I mentioned in other reviews how much I LOVE when businesses blame the computer? He asked if it had already been used which is a valid question and it hadn't, then continued to stare at the screen and coupon as if he was being asked to translate ancient hieroglyphics. He then told me that "all K-Marts are different and maybe it just wasn't accepted at their location." Correct me if I'm wrong, Jeff, but aren't K-Mart stores corporately owned and not a franchise? It's not as if I had a Groupon that was purchased for a specific location and there was no mention on the coupon of "not all locations will accept this coupon". I offered to pull up the e-mail on my phone and Jeff just shook his head, obviously not interested in practicing good customer service and keeping the customer happy. I told them to screw it and I was not going to purchase anything mainly out of principle, I would give another store my business and had to ask Jeff several times to hand me the coupon back so I could complain to their corporate office. I've worked in customer service and I've had people hand me coupons that were expired or with fine print that didn't apply to their purchase and have always done what needed to be done to make the customer happy. It was $10. And what's REALLY funny is that the subject of the e-mail was "We Miss You" They sent me $10 off just to get me back into their crappy chain. K-Mart nor Sears will ever get another penny from me because of this encounter unless an apology is made that they are sorry for the mistake and that they really do give a shit about my business. And that Mr Jeff gets some customer service training.
