  • With my 98 year old dad we have had quite the extensive hospital healthcare experience over the past few weeks. Our designated hospital for his care in Novant, even through Matthews is farther distance for us than Carolina (CMC) in Pineville. In our two trips to Carolina Emergency (CMC) in Pineville we met and liked the only doctor on duty there. Yes, there is only one medical physician on duty late at night and through to the mornings there. As good as he was with dad, how good would it be if there were a number of near simultaneous emergencies? We opt for Matthews and Novant. Presbyterian Novant in Matthews has a fully staffed emergency department with a number of physicians, nurses, techs, case workers and support staff. Yes, it is a busy place and they triage incoming patients according to the seriousness of their complaints. The most critical are taken first, with the lesser cases having to wait. We have done four emergency experiences. All were professional, the nurses prompt in getting dad stable and getting the necessary drips and imaging underway. Warm blankets were put on him and a case worker introduced herself (we have met three of the five, all were female) and she kept us totally informed. Once admitted, dad was taken to his room. Rooms are large and well equipped. You KNOW that you are in a hospital. A board is on the wall in the Emergency Department and patient rooms showing names of doctors, nurses, CNAs and other support people. You know who to contact if you have a question. Cleaners come in twice a day to clean the rooms. The patients clearly receive a lot of attention, even when they sometimes are not happy or cooperative. The staff takes it all in-stride and without any angst. We never experienced any "attitude" from anyone in four stays there. Novant is professional, tuned into their patients and provides great service and care. And the meals are excellent with the patients having special requests honored. Dad loves egg salad sandwiches and he asked for and got one every day, sometimes the kitchen and nurses would even give him one in addition to his meal or for breakfast or a snack. How very nice and caring.
