| - Last Friday we were able to score a last minute reservation at Bar Marco and I'm so glad we did! When Googling "Best Cocktails in Pittsburgh" or "Must-Do Restaurants", Bar Marco shows up on a number of lists, so naturally it made our "Weekend Restaurants List".
The atmosphere is extremely quaint and authentic to the original firehouse it used to be. All the staff (who are salaried by the way) were friendly, prompt, and so informative of the menu, especially Dom, who manages their small but great wine list. I opted for a delicious Rose while my boyfriend experimented with "Bartender's Choice" and different whiskeys - both were excellent 3 glasses later.
Food wise: We started with the Focaccia, which was absolutely delicious and the Arancini, which was meh. The arancini balls were filled with yellow spanish rice and in ours for some reason, no beef ragu like the menu stated. The San Marzano tomato sauce that accompanied the arancini was flavorful, but they don't measure up to true italian arancini.
For dinner, I got the Spinach Gnudi which in look and texture was similar to pale green play-doh balls. The texture is quite interesting and way more dough-y than gnocchi with little to no flavor. Probably wouldn't get this again. The other entree we tried was the hanger steak, again good but nothing I'd rave about after leaving the restaurant.
Overall: a great place to knock off the list if you enjoy being creative with your cocktails or want a light meal - stick to the apps and shared pasta dishes.
