  • A colleague recommended the bakery. Having a round trip on the Turnpike let me sample a number of different things. I have to say I don't get the hype. I live in a place with surprisingly few good bakeries that do basic stuff, but Oakmont came off badly even with DC places as a comparison. The bagels are probably ok if you toast them, but otherwise rubbery with toppings that easily fall off. The maple bacon donut had almost no discernable maple taste and the bacon was hard and chewy--this variety has gotten popular enough that even DC has a decent version. The cakes seem to be frosted with some sort of whipped cream where a good butter cream would work better. I passed on the patitsa--the pieces are too uniform (they never come out that way when Slovenian grannies make them) and the dough obviously was soft where it should be dense. The place is busy, but it may be that even Pittsburghers have lost out on decent bakeries.
