  • I had the pleasure of calling Las Vegas (among a few other cities) home in my pre-yelp days. Back then we tried Fat Greek at least once as we lived in the neighboring Chinatown, though I have no recollection of anything we ate there. We found ourselves in Vegas again this week. When Fat Greek showed up on my yelp search with glowing reviews, I know we had to try it again. It was Tuesday at noon with record high temperature (for Vegas) and this place was packed. As I noticed only two servers were working the entire dinning room with at least half of the tables having no food on them, I was a bit worried about the wait and service but it's too hot to go outside again. We grabbed the last empty table, and one of the servers promptly provided us with the menus. I have always enjoyed the appetizer selections in Greek/Meditteranean cuisine, so I suggested to my companion that we order the appetizer combo (which offers four different cold appetizers of our choice), and he obliged (a rarity that is). It took the server a while to come back to us, but we could see how busy she was and how fast she was moving so we made no fuss about it. I asked her about some of the appetizers since no description was given on the menu and she was helpful. We decided to try the Tirokefteri (whipped feta cheese) based on her recommendation plus our old standby Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Rice Dolmades. In addition, we ordered the Spanakopita. We got our food 15 minutes later and the 4 appetizers were neatly arranged on two oblong platters with plenty of warm pita wedges around. I first attacked the Dolmades but I was disappointed because the rice was too firm to my liking. To be fair, my companion had no problem with the rice texture and he gladly finished the other pieces on the plate, so I guess it must be personal preference. I also like the filling to be a mixture of rice and meat but they did specify these to be Rice Dolmades on the menu. Hummus was very smooth with a nice hint of Tahini though I would not mind more Tahini in it. Baba Ghanoush was solid, but the real winner was the cheese dish Tirokefteri. We will have to seek it out in our future visits to any Greek/Meditteranean restaurant. Most places just reheat their pre-made Spanakopita in a microwave when you order but their Spanakopita tasted like fresh out of oven. We enjoyed our food but I was more impressed by the kitchen staff (a small one it is from what I could tell) and the two young servers for keeping it calm during rush hour. I did ask her if they were short-handed that day and she said not really just everybody came in at one time. One of the great things about Yelp is to keep the memory alive. Now I can't blame on my early-onset Alzheimer's any more.
