| - Positives:
- Dedicated regulars who motivate you to keep coming and work harder simply by example.
- CLEAN. Although, some of the floor mats are peeling and should be replaced, all of the equipment, floors and surrounding areas are always clean and odor free. If you do hop on a bench or piece of equipment some clueless or selfish gym bro just hopped off of, there are several wipee/disinfectant stations throughout the gym available.
- Adequate locker rooms, usually clean (although always smelly - courtesy flush ladies, please!).
- Towel service.
- Several day care options and longer hours than most other basic gyms. If you are just dropping off a child while you work out just know that they are not there to be interacted with or enriched. They will just be 'watched', if you're fortunate. My kid always goes in the bouncy house (even though I tell him not to - he can't resist) and he ALWAYS comes out with some sort of injury from one of the older kids. The staff is always oblivious to this. They're usually holding one of the infants or talking to a parent. But I know this and only use this as a last resort - and it's nice to have that option.
- MOST of the staff is super friendly and helpful! They smile back at you when you walk in, they are happy to answer any questions or hand you equipment kept behind the desk. Great environment and start to your workout.
- Great classes! I haven't been to one in a while but when I first started coming they were the perfect guide to begin my fitness journey and push myself to the next level. Most of the instructors are knowledgeable, encouraging and help you correct form on some of the exercises.
- Elliptical, stair and treadmill machines - latest tech, pretty cool. I don't really get on these too much but they function pretty well and it's pretty cool you can tune into the daycare on the little TV's attached and watch your kid as you sweat to your tunes.
Negatives:
- Some of the equipment should be replaced or fixed. I have noticed some frayed steel coming through on some of the cable machines which is kind of scary. The mats and the barbell pads are frayed, pretty gross looking, lumpy, etc. These should be replaced as needed at gyms. There's no reason they should keep them on the floor like that for months. And not for being a pricier gym who also charges a 40 something fee every year for equipment. The gym on Gilbert and the 202 did receive a face lift and is actually a lot nicer, but unfortunately farther from me than this one.
- Although, most staff is very helpful and smile back when I greet them, there are a couple of staff members who unfortunately are higher on the pay scale, who NEVER greet, smile back or even acknowledge me when I walk in, past them, leave. And when I literally get in front of them and politely say, 'Excuse me, could you help me with something please.....' I get MAJOR 'tude. Not cool, girl. Not. Cool.
- Every gym gets busier at certain times of the day and especially around NY resolution time. But this gym (maybe because it's a bit smaller) gets PACKED where you can not work in a set, find a space on the floor to lay your mat down or to warm up in. I know other gyms like Lifetime will limit membership so you don't have that problem. I don't think they do anything like that here. And maybe that would be ok if they had like a 'gym etiquette' talk with members when signing up. A lot of people will take up like 3 benches/machines at a time during a super busy time while talking or texting on their phone, won't rerack weights or just stand around talking to others and clearly in the way. WTH! Sorry, getting irritated just thinking about it. Limit membership, less instant money but in the long run your dedicated gym goers won't leave for another gym.
- Not enough squat racks!!!! :( Always taken. Except on Mondays / International Chest Day.
(Tip:
Times of day they seem to have less traffic -
Anyday of the week: SUPER early in the morning, before 7a. Or 8pm to close.
On weekdays:
After classes are over - 11ish but before noon lunchtime crowd hits.
After 1:30 pm and before the after-work crowd comes in about 4.30ish.
8pm to close.
Sundays are pretty decent too.)
Eat clean, and stay strong my friends!
