| - Third time I have visited 5 Church.
Now that I know where they are, it helps. If that sounds stupid (they are at 5 Church, idiot), please note on the website and Google maps the address is Tryon street. Try going on a busy Friday or Saturday night and realize you have to circle the maze of one way streets to actually get in front of the restaurant. Very frustrating and a little puzzling that owners don't try to change their business listing to remedy this.
The place is beautiful - and they have beautiful people working there. I have always liked any server we have had, but find the bartenders dismissive and condescending. Yes, I know you are busy, but it is your job, right? Not making eye contact so I can get your attention to get a drink is not good bartending. It has been my experience every visit.
The food is avant-garde - love. Last time we got the tuna tartare small plate. The diced jicama was a great textural addition. Warning though, this is very very hot (spicy). Next time I will ask to dial back the scotch bonnet. The bread served with it however was a total miss. Would not hold up to the meat being place on it. Perhaps if it were toasted or a crisp bread, or even more of a cupped - type shape to drop the tuna into it would be more successful.
We got a few other small plates. Spicy is the name of the game here folks so order accordingly. All was well executed.
It's noisy here, but our table was small enough that we could hear each other talk just fine, even with the table next to us so close I could have eaten from their plates. :)
