| - Up until ~2 hours ago I was what you'd describe as a Costco fanboy. I loved the selection, the samples, and the savings and would usually shop there two times per month. I loved the Costco experience and nothing was more satisfying than loading the cart with a 30 pack of double ply (Kirkland brand of course), hitting up every single sample stand in the store, and gorging on a $1.50 hotdog/soda combo. I've always had a good experience and the employees were always nice...until today.
For the past year I've been shopping at Costco with my parents' membership without issue. As a young adult still living at home with my parents I didn't think anything of it. In fact, I would always pick things up for my very busy parents whenever I went to Costco. They're letting me live under their roof so the least I can do is grab things for them during my Costco run, right? WRONG--in they eyes of the Costco. Like I said, I've been using my parents' membership for over a year without any issue so I was startled when the cashier began interrogating me about the membership. I was even more alarmed when she scolded me and said I would not be allowed to complete my purchase since I was not a true member. Woah, woah, woah, wait a minute! I just spent an hour walking through your store, loaded up a cart full of items, and you're telling me I can't buy any of it? I'm literally standing at the cash register with money in my hand and you're telling me I can't buy any of this? Costco, do you really not want my money? I guess not. The cashier grabbed the manager who then took my card to make a note about illegal use of membership on the account. I don't know what the note says but I warned my parents that Costco may require them to submit fingerprints and DNA samples next time they check out. When he returned he said he was supposed to confiscate the card but would let me keep it this time and let me complete my purchase. Ok, I'll admit that was nice of him and he didn't have to do that. There's the Costco that I like.
So yes, I violated the membership policy. I was unaware I was doing anything wrong and never had any problems using the membership for over a year. Your current membership policy is outdated and overly restrictive. I feel Costco should offer a family membership. I would have signed up. It's too bad that this negative experience has resulted in me dismissing Costco from my places to shop.
The good news--I just priced several of my usual Costco purchases on Amazon.com. With Amazon Subscribe and Save, I will be saving more money than I do with Costco. And with Amazon, I can add family members to my account. Wonderful, what a novel concept! So thanks Costco, your asinine membership policy will enable me to save even more money each month now that I will be shopping with Amazon instead of you. Does Amazon deliver hotdogs and soda yet?
