| - Our 4 year old had his first checkup, cleaning and x-rays done here. The technicians/assistants and dentist were all very kind and were great with our little guy. But I have a serious issue with their billing.
The only thing our insurance doesn't cover is orthodontics because, well, he's 4 and doesn't need braces any time soon. When we received the final bill stating what our insurance covered and didn't, the x-rays weren't covered. After speaking with our insurance company, it's because Modern Dentistry had used an orthodontics billing code instead of a standard procedural x-ray code. Upon this discovery, I spoke to Joanna at Modern Dentistry who couldn't provide me with a viable or acceptable explanation. Things she did say were, "That's just how we bill them and we don't expect insurance companies to pay for it.", "No, you can't speak directly with our billing department.", "It's because of the group of photos that were taken.", "On your next visit, you can just opt out of X-rays.". Sorry to break it to you Joanna, but there will not be a next visit.
Fortunately, my insurance company finds that absolutely ridiculous. As do I. I insisted that a letter be provided on their letterhead to be picked up during that day's business hours stating that in no way were these x-rays related to anything in orthodontics.
This experience left me feeling duped. They had called our insurance company to verify coverage and I believe they chose to bill us as they did to weasel $514 extra dollars out of us. The experience left a huge feeling of mistrust.
A few good things came out of this entire fiasco, which is keeping me from giving them a 1 star rating; they had referred us to My Kid's Dentist on MLK and they were amazing, from start to finish AND with no hiccups in the billing so we will be going there on a regular basis. The other is that we found out how much of an awesome little trooper T is and that he isn't afraid of the dentist at all.
