  • I finally saw the light and met Jesús... the house kitty at Songbird Coffee and Tea House! With hours of laptop work to complete, I needed a place where I could burrow myself with caffeine, free WiFi and electrical outlets. This place had it all plus more. Songbird is a cozy and comfy residence transformed into coffee shop in the Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix. Using local coffee roasters and teas from Tucson, you'll be able to find a beverage to suit your taste. My attention was directed to the large iced green tea latte made with Japanese matcha powder and almond milk ($5.50 + $0.75 almond milk). Alisa started my drink with a small amount of hot water into a shaker to dissolve the matcha powder. To the matcha concentrate, she added it to ice, almond milk and a couple squirts of sugar-free vanilla. My drink tasted great but had a few powder clumps which had a bitter aftertaste. The glass display of rotating homemade pastries looked heavenly. From bagels to lemon poppyseed cake, all of them were baked daily in their back kitchen. While inside, there are two rooms: back where you place your order and opposite a sofa and chair for conversations or relaxing. In the front room, you'll see six tables and bar table seating with plenty of natural light and soft background music. The front yard had floating light fixtures and red brightly painted lawn chairs and picnic tables to enjoy the desert weather. A swing attached to the porch was a gentle alternative to sway and soak in the fresh air. It looked rather romantic too. Free parking stalls are located in the back of the house along with metered street parking in front. The staff was very knowledgable, friendly and held much pride in providing the best quality in their food and beverages. The highlight of Songbird was my friendly interaction with the socialite bon vivant, Jesús the ultimate cat-panion. He's living large in his cat-condo located by the swing and appreciates attention and affection. Whenever you're in town, come by and grab a drink and you too should see the light and find Jesús.
