  • My boyfriend and I went to Regent Square on a Saturday to have breakfast at Square Cafe, but it was so crowded and such a nice day out that we decided to take a walk to see what other restaurants were open and we stumbled onto Root 174. I rarely go to Regent Square other than to go to Square Cafe so I wasn't even familiar with this restaurant. We were the only patrons there on a sunny Saturday around 11:00 AM. The interior of restaurant is intimate and somewhat cozy with a somewhat eclectic decor. Because we were the only people there, our server and service was quick and friendly. Unfortunately they were actually out of a couple of items on the lunch menu that day so I was unable to try the vegan "meatloaf" which sounded delicious. We started with the Crispy Brussels sprouts with balsamic, and this was by far our favorite part of the meal. The sprouts were lightly charred and the warm balsamic glaze we very flavorful. We also shared the house salad which consisted of Mesclun green, maple black pepper vin, blue cheese, candied pecans, a port dressing. The flavors of the salad were nice, but the actual greens were a bit sparse. For our entrees I had the vegan falafel which was made with quinoa, and accompanied by small dollops of tzatziki, harissa, tahini, but it came as 2 small falafels in a small salad bowl rather than wrapped in the pita that was listed on the menu. My boyfriend ordered a chorizo taco that came with 2 stacked small corn tortillas topped with some chorizo, creme fraiche, red onion, corn, and cilantro and a vegan falafel taco that also came with 2 stacked small corn tortillas topped with 2 small falafels and harissa, cilantro, and onion. For dessert we shared a chocolate tart with some coffee. Overall, the food was well-seasoned, inventive, and tasty, but honestly for the cost, the portions are rather small at least for lunch.
