| - I've been a part of the Axe Capoeira group for the last 2 years and it's been a great experience. If you're looking for a combination of yoga, jujitsu, gymnastics, pilates, and body-weight training, capoeira is the entire package. It's also an introduction to Brazilian music, movement, and dance. It's this combination of martial arts, acrobatics, and music/dance that makes capoeira really different from other martial arts.
The head instructor, Contra Mestre Paraiba, is a fantastic teacher and cares genuinely about his students. Not only can you tell his skills are at an elite level but his ability to slow things down and teach things very clearly makes it easier for beginners and veterans to grasp the myriad of unique capoeira movements.
I admit, it was a little bit intimidating at first to join a new group but once I got over my own anxiety, the group became a second home for me. If you're new to capoeira, make sure you sign up for a Beginner course (ideally) so you can train with some other folks who are at your level.
If you're up for a challenge for your mind and your body, capoeira is a great vehicle to do that. Before starting with capoeira, I could barely even imagine myself doing a handstand (or anything remotely acrobatic) but after 2 years I'm just blown away with the progress that I've made. (And yes, I can do a handstand now!) :)
