| - Honest Ed's is a Toronto institution, sure, but it's one that I don't get. Over the past 30+ years I've made several visits, and I can tell you this: Honest Ed's is an awful, depressing place with unappealing merchandise, rip-off prices, and wan, sad-looking employees. Expired, off-brand foods and toiletries sit in bins and on filthy, dusty, dilapidated shelves in a labyrinthine maze of rooms that looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the 1960s--and not in a charming, "vintage" way, either. The other junk on offer here isn't even worthy of a dollar store--yet Ed's is charging a LOT more than a dollar for most of this stuff. Can't wait for Dishonest Ed's to close. Its faded circus-casino facade is a stain on Bloor St. W.
Check out the new, extra-large Dollarama store on Bloor just east of Bathurst--practically across the street from Ed's--for true bargains and a clean, well-organized shopping environment with new, non-expired merchandise.
