  • My husband, toddler, and myself moved to Arizona from out of state last year. I was moving for work, so I had a very short period of time in which to find a temporary place to live. We looked online before flying out to Phoenix and settled on this rental company because they were the only place that would allow us to have our dog, a Doberman. The leasing agent was polite and friendly, but didn't provide us with many options outside of the research we had already done ourselves. She also wasn't "allowed" to disclose any information on the properties themselves.... (now I know why). When we decided on a house (unaware really of the location, neighborhood, or common perceptions of that general area), the leasing agent seemed a bit taken aback that we would move forward with the house, asking us "Are you certain you want to go with this one?" - but again, never really providing any further comment. We didn't have time to look for anything else, and this one seemed to fit our budget and meet all of the needs we were looking for. When we moved in, the property manager (Brian) met my husband there and then sent someone separately later to do a "check-in" of the house. I wasn't present, but my husband was. We found out later that all of the things my husband pointed out to the individual were not written down on our check in, and the house was basically marked as being in perfect condition. Day 1 - before we even had boxes unpacked and rooms arranged for living, we found a LIVE roach in our master bath!!!! UGH - I do not do well with pests, especially ones as nasty as this. I killed it, took a picture and sent it to the leasing agent as well as the property manager. The leasing agent responded with - "Ok, it's a dead roach, so what?" So what??? I may not be from Arizona, but you can't tell me that this is a commonality that ANYONE is just OK with... Then Brian, the property manager, (who took his time getting back with me) said it's just a sewer roach and they are normal for this area. If I see more than 2, then let him know. Well, I saw more than 2 by Day 2. Day 2 - Property manager stopped communicating with me on said infestation. I contacted IH to report the issue who assured me that the place was sprayed before move in and this was likely just a reaction to the pest control chemicals..... Fast forward a month and the roach problem never subsided. We were seeing them sporadically throughout the house. Never in the kitchen, but almost always in the bathroom and, specifically, in the bedroom nearest the pool. So I called again. They setup an appointment with a pest control company for a one time courtesy spray. We didn't see anything for about a month or two, then they started resurfacing. I had to call a few more times while IH continued to tell me that I was responsible for pest control when CLEARLY there was something wrong here - they were getting in somehow and IH was not doing anything to stop it. I can't tell you how many calls and tickets I submitted. It wasn't until I found a couple of live ones in my toddlers room that I lost it and I finally had to threaten legal action before their manager contacted ME back and I had to go through the entire story. She looked through my history, apologized, and was sympathetic, but this had already gone on long enough. She arranged for a different pest control company to come out and spray inside and outside of the house, but I also requested that the house be inspected for any possible entryways for the pests, and treated so they were no longer enter-able. Guess what -- IH denied the request and would not pay for that to be done. YAY. I mentioned we moved in last year? So, we moved in at the beginning of June. Needless to say, my first electric bill was INSANE, especially given the size of the house and even for that time of year. We were looking at a bill over $500! I contacted the electric company who gave us tips for reducing usage during the summer, etc. I also contacted IH to express my concerns with the electric bill - they chalked it up to it being our fault and needing to be very careful with how we used air during the summer. The bill didn't get any better, although we seriously minimized the usage of the AC, to literally only using it mostly after 6pm and on the weekends, as necessary. The website of the electric company showed comparable houses in size with average electric bills of two hundred dollars or less - still, I was stuck. It wasn't until January of this year that i really KNEW something was wrong. At a time of the year when I really didn't use AC or heat through the entire month, our bill was still over $200.... I called IH again and was adamant that this had to be wrong and someone needed to check our unit. After 2 visits, and sending out and actual HVAC technician - it was determined that yes, there was an issue with our unit and it was working overtime to meet our needs.... SMH. No refunds for us.
