  • I have been visiting the DCFM for several years and it is every bit worth the 2-hour drive from the Chicagoland suburbs to enjoy this wonderful market. This market has been going strong since September 1972. Anything and everything that you can imagine is here. Fruits, veggies, gourds, pastries, honey, jerky, meat, eggs, mushrooms, cider, cheese, plants, etc. It is truly a feast for the senses. It is a foodies paradise, as there are so many wonderful choices. The farmers are always friendly and informative and should you ever find yourself unsure of how to prepare a certain vegetable, simply ask and they will offer a few great ideas. The market is located on Capitol Square and encircles the Capitol building, so as you meander the vendors, the Capitol subtly glows in the backdrop. It is truly a spectacular and magical time during the autumn season, as the golden leaves are even more pronounced against the strong presence of the Capitol. Many arrive to simply sit in the grass and snack on the delicious breads and pastries that are so prevalent at the market. It is a relaxing, friendly and social market with fantastic edibles. You will be anxious to get home and create your own wonderful culinary creations with the uber-fresh ingredients. This is the largest producer-only farmers' market in America and they have rightfully gained and retained a fabulous reputation and loyal following. If you love quality farmers markets and road trips, plan a jaunt to Madison, WI....you will be extremely pleased. SPECS: Markets are held Wednesday's (200 Block of MLK Drive & Saturday's. For specifics, visit: http://dcfm.org/markets/saturday-on-the-square As of this post, the last "outdoor" market for 2017 is: Nov. 11th (6:15 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.) Parking is two blocks away in a secured multi-level garage. Rates are cheap. For 1.5 hours parking was $1.75. TIP: After you are done at the market, drop your goodies at your vehicle and return to the Square and relax at the 'Old Fashioned' for a great meal and drinks.....This is a SUPERB way to spend a Saturday!
