| - Let's get this out of the way first: I've never actually set foot in this store. While I live in Las Vegas, I live far, far in the northwest and work swing, so getting up early to make that kind of drive simply is not on my list of priorities, no matter how good the products are. That said, I've ordered online several times now, and I've tried a great deal of the teas and several of the spices over the past however many months, but I've yet to leave a review.
1.) The website: It gets the job done. I think it could stand for a bit of, shall we say, sprucing up in terms of its overall design, but if a virtual facelift is the biggest suggestion I can make, I'd say we're doing pretty well here. The cart can sometimes be a little sluggish in updating if you navigate via multiple tabs, but the overall checkout process is a quick and clean one, and it's never taken long to get confirmation of my order. Note that the virtual stock is not always perfect synchronized with what may be available, and that leads me into my next point.
2.) The owners: Twice now I've chosen something that they were low on stock for. I was contacted promptly the next business day - I shop late at night - via email letting me know and offering to either refund the purchase or choose something else. Both times this has happened, I've even received a sample of the product out of what's left, and the owners have gone out of their way to throw a little something my way. I'm an easy-going person, so I don't require any compensation on their part, but this practice let's me know that they genuinely care that I am getting the most out of my experience with them.
3.) The packaging: This may not mean much if you don't shop online, but everything I've purchased has arrived via 1-day priority with all products neatly separated and wrapped in a way that nothing is really merging with something else. This is pretty important for tea and spices considering how much they can mingle together if handled improperly. Along with an invoice, I also always have a brief personal note thanking me for my support and either information cards or recipes.
4.) The products: Now to the heart of the matter, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better option in Vegas when it comes to variety, quality, and value. If you're browsing through a shop like this, chances are you enjoy the ritual of tea and take joy in cooking. For the uninitiated, a place like this might seem daunting; however, they've taken great care to provide information about every product they carry, ranging from the origin, its traditional usage, preparation, and even similar available items. This information may be old hat to some customers, but if you're starting off, it's vital to know things like how hot the water should be and how long it should be brewed lest you wind up with an astringent and bitter brew. I've never had to ask about anything I've purchased, but my experience with the owners thus far tells me that they would welcome any should you be unsure about something.
This isn't a place you'll find a box of bagged tea remnants you can plop into a cup of water and forget about, and while I find their prices quite reasonable, it might be good to note that their prices do reflect a premium product, and if you're just starting out on your culinary journey, you might get something of a sticker shock on some items. That said, you can certainly grab many of the 1-oz. and 2-oz. bags to sample at a modest price. For those who are searching for something new to try, something personal to gift, or something to look forward to at the end of the day, you will certainly find your fill of choices at Sheffield Spice & Tea Co.
