  • Gray Line advertised a 'guided' tour of the west rim / grand canyon - comfortable accommodations enroute to the rim and pickups /drop-offs at the respective hotels. The pickup driver was almost an hour late, so we all started out behind schedule. Then we were taken to a staging area where passengers were herded into various groups, issued boarding passes / bracelets and given about 2 minutes to grab a cup of coffee. Once underway, the driver commenced his 'briefing' which basically consisted of a continuous stream of ridiculous gibberish, followed by a worn-out movie from the 1970s. Overall, the gray line canyon tour could be described as a 14-hour bus ride to nowhere . On finally reaching the visitor center/west rim, we were allowed approximately 2 hours to view the canyon and experience the park area - this is not enough time after a long and exhausting ride on a cramped bus If you like listening to nonsense on the intercom for hours at a stretch - if you like being herded like cattle - if you like wolfing down your 'box lunch' which consists of congealed microwave offerings - then you will undoubtedly also want a 14 hour root canal after your return from the gray lines canyon tour. Suggestion : rent a car - drive to the canyon yourself. Rent a camel. Ride like Lawrence of Arabia. Eat a C ration from WWII on the way if you want to 'rough it'...anything would be better than gray line tours.
