  • Hail to the Lion! Penn State ice cream is now available at Krum's creamery in Elizabeth! I got to meet the owner Alexia Krum who told me that she goes weekly to State College to purchase their renown ice cream from their famous Creamery. In case any of you are familiar with Penn State the Creamery has moved within the University but is still going strong! The Creamery is located in a tiny strip mall next to Fox's pizza. If you need to use the restroom then you have permission to go over there. The place is sit down or take out and there are some of the yearbooks around which are called the La Vie. On to the ice cream. Penn State rules will not allow you to mix flavors when you purchase but you are allowed to sample their offerings. So this place follows their same rules. All but two are their standard flavors. Each week they bring two new ones in to try. My favorite which I haven't had in a long time is Peachy Paterno. It is peach ice cream with bits of peaches woven into it. You can get a standard cone, waffle cone, or cup. Two scoops is usually plenty for me since they are generous and relatively inexpensive. If you want topping they are available for a minimal charge. It was just as good as I remembered it. In addition to Penn State ice cream they carry your traditional soft serve ice cream but if you are making the trek down here then by all mean go for the Creamery ice cream. Those flavors are listed on chalkboards below each duo of flavors. The ones on the wall are their standard soft serve. Oddly enough Alexia told me they don't have a phone but will respond fairly quickly if you are on Facebook. She also told me that on Sats. only they bring in sticky buns from the Old College diner. That's what I heard they are famous for. She told me they go fairly fast but was willing to hold one for me if I planned on coming back. I told this weekend was bad for me but I will definitely notify her the next Sat I plan to come down because I can't wait to try them! They do have a rewards card which I added to my "ice cream" pile and yes, you can purchase prepackaged pints or quarts of the frozen ice cream. If you do then I would advise you bring a cooler with prepacked blue freezes because the one the sell you is nice but you also have to pay for both it and the blue freezes on top of that. I learned it only lasts an hour. Since I had a rush hour to contend with I said I would be back soon with my own to share. Penn State Creamery ice cream is top notch and although this is a bit of a drive you are nowhere near driving 3 1/2 hours to State College. If you know Penn State ice cream you are getting the real deal. Happy Valley is now come to Swiss Way off Route 48 in Elizabeth, PA!
