  • Make no mistake, you're paying dearly for the "SW" name and atmosphere. I read somewhere that back in the old days when Steve Wynn designed the Bellagio, he regretted having those Fountains out in the public because people wouldn't have to go inside the casino (and be tempted to gamble). He also said he wanted a signature restaurant overlooking the fountains. Well, when he designed the Wynn, he made sure to get what he wanted. The SW Steakhouse overlooks the Lake of Dreams, which obviously isn't quite as spectacular as the Fountain, but is entertaining in its own quirky and eccentric way. My wife and I sat right on the patio overlooking the lake, and with the sun going down, it was the perfect setting for an anniversary dinner. We started off with a fantastic bread basket, which included some tasty pretzel rolls. But he cheddar and bacon biscuits were clearly the star. Along with a smear of butter, which had a sprinkle of black Hawaiian sea salt, we had to restrain ourselves before the real food arrived. Here's the breakdown of what we ordered: - Seafood spectacular: a gorgeous display of chilled seafood, consisting of mussels, clams, jump shrimp, crab spread, King crab legs, and lobster tails. Everything was incredibly tender and flavorful, except for the lobster tails which we saved for the end. It was bland and chewy, and drawn butter probably couldn't even save its life. - Dry aged tomahawk chop (rib eye): requested medium, this steak had great marbling (almost too much fat), tender, well-seasoned, and had an excellent crust. It came with a small arugula salad directly on top of the steak, which I thought was weird. Apparently, this was the only dry aged steak on the menu, but I didn't quite get that robust, beefy flavor that I was looking for. I thought about getting the much talked about chili-rubbed rib eye for 2, but I just didn't want the spiciness and seasonings to take away from the flavor of the steak. I also got to sample some of their steak sauces -- they all were okay as a dipping sauce for something else, but I just didn't think they belonged on a good piece of steak. - Truffle creamed corn: an okay side dish for me, as I didn't taste much of the truffle flavor. I don't really eat much creamed corn, so I kept thinking baby food for some odd reason. That would be the most expensive baby food in the world, that's for sure. Looking back, I probably would've preferred some mashed potatoes or some mushrooms for the sides. - Peanut butter and banana crunch: a stunning dessert, both in taste and presentation. A beautiful "Happy Anniversary" was written on the plate in chocolate. I'm not good at describing dessert, so all I can tell you is that it was rich and decadent, without being overly sweet. The peanut butter and banana flavors are so well-balanced, so if you're a fan of both, check out this dessert. Overall, this was a good meal -- definitely not cheap, that's for sure. The ambiance isn't one of those quiet, dark, and dimly lit steakhouses. It's more loud, vibrant, and airy -- with the water from the fountain as the background noise. We even got a chance to see the giant mutant frog serenade Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" just as we finished dinner. I heard people plan their trips just to see that frog!
