| - If I am being ruthlessly fair, I have to give David's Tea a 2 1/2. Just fair for the service, Good to Very Good for the tea itself. My daughter and I are tea afficionados. We like black tea, many flavours of black tea, oolong tea, a good white tea, Jasmine tea & Chinese green tea. (My cupboard looks like Ramona Flowers' tea cupboard in "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World" film LOL) I find most domestic green teas don't have enough flavour. We import Stash teas & Bigelow teas from the USA. We haunt gourmet tourist gift shops to find the elusive truly strawberry flavoured black tea. Tetley used to make one but it didn't sell well enough, so I keep looking for the elusive perfect strawberry or other flavoured black tea.
We thought we'd found a very good strawberry loose leaf tea at David's Tea. It's called Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait, and despite being an herbal tea, hibiscus based, caffeine free and no actual black tea involved, it's wonderful. So daughter no. 1 and I went back to the Yorkdale branch of David's Tea to replenish our rapidly diminishing supply of Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait.
Maybe we picked the wrong time to come. I think the one lady on duty could have chosen to recognize when someone has been waiting patiently a VERY LONG TIME, she could say to the monopolizing and oblivious pair of women in front, to excuse her for a moment, so she could see if she could assist the second pair of women cooling their heels behind them, namely my daughter and me.
The two women customers in front of us had that peculiar and unique attitude of being born to wealth and privilege which makes you completely ignore the people around you as if they were ants crawling past you on the sidewalk. They had decided to make the female "servant" behind the counter display and describe to them the entire array of David's Tea wares and they were absolutely in no hurry at all to choose their tea and BUY IT. Nope, they were in no hurry to go anywhere. They were the "ladies who lunch" and us poor proletariat customers who truly loved fine teas might as well be fleas on their designer collars.
Never have two people waited so long in so otherwise empty a shop while two extremely selfish people acted like the David's Tea employee belonged to them personally. We finally left in absolute disgust because we might have waited there the rest of the day and have never been served. Does that David's Tea counter clerk realize even now that she lost a "for sure" sale over a pair of self important ditherers who couldn't make up their minds?
Since David's Tea apparently thinks one staff member at the counter is enough for a huge busy shopping centre like Yorkdale, & they also won't let you buy anything till that staff member has served you behind the counter AND tried to upsell you into buying 3 or more tea flavours, their staff are going to have to be trained to ask monopolizing customers to step aside for a minute so she can attend to the other customers waiting to be served. It could start a revolution at David's Tea, my friends, where your time and convenience would actually matter to them!
In the meantime, I have a suggestion for all you fellow tea lovers. If you'd like an excellent selection of good quality and variety of fine teas, without all the pretentiousness, lining up and ritual of "educating" you on their teas, go to the Bulk Barn. I am serious. They have an excellent loose leaf Strawberry Cream White Tea and an Oolong Orange flavoured Tea that are every bit as good as one of David's Tea's selections. You can sniff them yourself from the big scoops, choose them, pack them in a plastic bag and label them, and buy one of those metal tea tins on the upper shelf to store them with. Unlike David Tea's horrible stiff metal tea tins, they are relatively easy to open, have a window on top so you can view the contents, and are magnetized on the bottom so you can stack them vertically. You will be able to stack your own "Ramona Flowers" many tea towers cupboard. Much cheaper too. Proletariat Pandora has spoken.
