As a gym virgin, the overly aggressive sales people convinced me to purchase a year's subscription to Extreme fitness and to try a session with their personal trainers. I think for the whole year, I went to the gym maybe 5 times. This was for the year Oct 2007-Oct 2008. I know this review is way late but I just found out about YELP!
ENVIRONMENT
I felt very claustrophobic in the gym. There are no windows and they keep the gym very dark. So not ideal for people like me.
The air circulation was poor. The air felt very heavy when you walked into the gym.
CROWD
All the patrons are really fit and beautiful. And if you're self-conscious about how fit you are or how you look, it's very depressing going in.
CLASSES
never attended any. Was too intimated by the people there.
MACHINES/EQUIPMENT
yes there were state of the art equipment with TVs at each machine. They gym is fairly new but what was kind of annoying was sometimes the TVs were broken (no audio or no visual)
There was no swimming pool.
COST
RIDICULOUSLY expensive. The trainers at the time charged $75 dollars an hour and memberships totaled about $700 for me. At the time, my friend was a trainer at Goodlife and she said the trainers going rate is either $35 or $55/hr and the membership was around $450. The hours and classes available (w/ your membership) were fairly similar. I was ripped off big time.
I did not have a good experience at Extreme. The facilities and their operations could have changed since then so keep that in mind. If I do try to be a member at a gym, I'm going to try Goodlife. Otherwise, I'm going to stick to running on the streets.
