  • So this place has its ups and downs and I regret that this review won't be as long as my standard. Honestly though, how does one write an essay on a doughnut shop? So I don't hate them. I'm of the opinion, and I will die on this hill, that if I want cake I'll eat cake. Shaping cake like a doughnut and deep frying it doesn't make it a doughnut. I'm all about risen/yeast doughnuts. Cuz you know, IT'S IN THE NAME. *Ahem* Excuse me, I have feelings on this. Well over half of what Hurts offers are cake. Which is weird because they mostly only advertise the yeast on their Facebook page. You're in for a nasty, for me, surprise when you go in for that pictured doughnut for it to end up being cake. Double bad is that even if they're dead, they won't decorate the yeast the same for you. Trust me, we tried when they did the unicorn doughnut. WHICH THEY ADVERTISED AS YEAST. Again, excuse me. The doughnuts are actually pretty good, if a little cloying. You can't say you didn't realize that was a very real possibility just walking in. They are not small. I think the thing I feel most consistently let down by is the toppings themselves. They're famous for the maple bacon long john, but the bacon is gooey and kind of undercooked. If it were crispy or just slightly more cooked, it'd make all the difference in the world. The cereal toppings are always stale. Always. So if you're into stale marshmallows from Lucky Charms, you've found your place. Same with the Cocoa Puffs and Captain Crunch. I still go here occasionally when I'm in the area, but I don't make trips out to Middleton just for them.
