| - Greasy, fried, uninspired. This was our first visit to the Penguin and it will sadly be our last. We'd been looking forward to going to the diner since it's a Charlotte institution but were thoroughly underwhelmed by our experience.
Over half the menu is fried; the appetizers, the sandwiches, the hot dogs, even the desserts. Everything ended up tasting like everything else...the onion rings were slightly burned and just tasted like grease. The mac and cheese bites, fries and fried pickles were all very bready and tasted like grease. I spent the rest of the day with horrible stomach pains.
The Penguin is horrible for the environment, too, which is important to me. They use styrofoam cups for everything, even the coffee. (They don't offer decaf coffee, which is strange). All the sauces, dips, dressings are in little plastic cups, as well. I can't imagine how much trash they produce in a day, it must be staggering.
The staff was nice, the music was deafening and the bathroom was a nightmare of black and red spilled paint. Definitely will not return.
