| - I have really mixed feelings about this place. On one hand it seemed like a classy place from the one Black and White photo I saw on yelp. Seemed like it would be cool to check. On the other hand I did not look at another telling photo of a ripped go-go boy dancing on the bar.
As I walked in I was definitely expecting something more sophisticated, but the terrible music with wildly different scenes and clicks within mere feet of each other gave me an uneasy feeling. Similar to looking at a collage when all you want to see is the normal trappings of welcoming atmosphere and non-forced visual juxtapositions that leave you wondering if there should have been a sign outside about what kind of theme night it was.
The outside patio area was nice enough of a space, but the furniture had a competing vibe of highly social couches, or very lonely high top tables. The polyester rainbow colored patio streamers, the kind you would expect at an old folks home, attached to the metal trussing used for outdoor staging, was the only visual indicator that this was a gay bar.
Lastly the drinks. Well I came in to order a The FItzgerald (2 oz gin, .75 oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice, .75 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes angostura bitters. ) . I forgot what it was made of, something I rely on competent bartender's to know. But the person there had no idea what I was talking about. Thankfully my partner is a bartender. They explained what it was.
"We don't use simple syrup at this bar" was the response I got, I wanted it anyways. BTW it tasted terrible with splenda. Not only did I not finish my drink, I was simply put off by his lack of knowledge, the bars lack of a common drink ingredient, and his knowier-than-thou attitude. As if i had Made Up a drink solely to embarrass him.
Its not accurate to compare bars to other bars specifically, so ill just say if this was a bar in SF I would not go back.
I feel this place could be a great place after some fine management decisions are implemented to get back on the horse. I will visit again when such changes have been made.
