Happy birthday to me. My girlfriend, knowing I am a hop head took me to Hough's for a little birthday excursion. It was my first trip and I must say she did a marvelous job.
Hough's has been serving the community of Greenfield since 2008 and the upper level most definitely resembles a neighborhood dive. That's cool with me; I love dive bars. It's comfortable, but also clean and inviting which can be a hard balance to strike. Down a small stair you get to a heavily wooded area. Big wood wall with about 65 taps, woot tables and a wood bar. Very reminiscent of a German beer hall. The smell of malted cereal grains from next door's Copper Kettle Brewing pervades the space.
The beer selection is well above par. Too many to choose from. On top of that they are all poured in correct glassware. They also feature a cocktail menu worthy of a downtown mixology bar.
The food here is decent too. We opted just for appetizers but we loved them. The menu is mostly bar food, but at least it's well done bar food. We had the wings in a honey chipotle sauce and pulled pork nachos. The wings were great but the nachos, while good, said they had beer cheese on them. Not so. I have been to a lot of ball parks and I know canned nacho cheese when I see it. Thats why they lose a star for me.
All in all I like Hough's. It's a great neighborhood bar that has a great beer selection in a relaxed unpretentious atmosphere. I will most certainly be back.
