| - February 19th Friday evening, my husband and I were pulled over by two scottsdale police officers in North Scottsdale. Their lack of professionalism, bullying technique, sarcasm, and assumption of guilt made us very disappointed and angry at SPD.
They opted to do "bad cop bad cop" and perhaps they were tired as they just finished pulling over another person just a few seconds before us.
The female officer approached my door passenger side, while the male officer approached my husband's side driver side. She started off with hi I said hi and then she motioned over to tell my husband the other officer was by his side to let his window down. That was the end of the niceness.
First questions - "where are you coming from?" Joe said the MIM. Male officer said how when the MIM is in the other direction? Female officer asked - something about what are we doing here, i answered sternly "we live here!"
The male officer Asked for my husbands name and drivers license while the female asked me for registration and insurance. My husband Joe then asked why we were pulled over the male officer explained very rapidly something along the lines of improper changing of lanes due to emergency vehicle and he could take my husband to jail now since he has a restricted license (which was lifted August 2015). I explained the restriction was lifted and if i was not so overwhelmed i would have found my proof in my glovebox. Simultaneously Female officer asked constantly if i found the insurance card, i kept saying not yet. It seemed like a practiced routine they are used to performing. My husband had to ask several times why we were pulled over and their reason did not make sense. They were on the shoulder and we were on a single lane off ramp. They had finished giving some other poor soul a ticket, as a car was slowly moving forward on the shoulder, officers were inside their car not moving.
Male officer told us "you could have hit me back there and I almost got hit recently same situation and I have a child to go home to."
All the while female officer got inpatient and more aggressive as I was looking for insurance card constantly saying "did you find it!"
After I had enough ill treatment and she says to me he is driving illegally and you are giving me attitude, i said "i will not be treated this way I am recording this!" She pointed to her body camera and i still got my phone and recorded.
They then became nicer, calm, professional. They said never mind about insurance we see you are trying to get it, we are just writing a ticket need your signature which doesnt admit guilt. You are not going to jail you seem like a nice guy.
Protect and serve is not the motto these two follow. - far from it. I hope to bring more attention to this. Also, 2 officers were white, we are brown(islanders), my husband looks mexican and yes he has been profiled in Arizona in the past. We were so hurt by this we are considering moving.
You will not know how this feels unless you are pulled over as a minority. Sad thing is - how very real it is for a simple pullover to escalate into a violent potentially deadly instance. My Mom was a police officer who worked really hard at knowing her community and residents, cannot say SPD does.
My husband was afraid to speak his mind, while I did - could have gotten myself arrested, you just never know.
I so want to place their names here but i won't.
UPDATE 4/8/16:
we went to court along with about 25 other strangers who had varied violations. our lawyer came, this is a benefit that my husband can use based on his group or employer plan to seek council when needed and he showed up right at our scheduled time(nerve racking). The other people in the court room did not have representation which is sad and a very real problem obviously since they either cannot afford a lawyer or may not know where to begin. It seemed our lawyer got ahead of the que and spoke to the judge with my husband. Restricted license charge was dismissed. However the improper clearance of an emergency vehicle was not dropped and we had a choice either to pursue a court trial date with our lawyer or to take the driving school option. my husband took the driving school option for one particular reason -- the points that would come along with being found guilty is going to be costly insurance wise insurance premium will be affected so he opted for driving school. The right course of action is to go to trial fight for our right To be heard and to explain the inappropriate behavior of the officers and to tell the court and others that this whole pullover which came on the heels of another pullover seemed very staged planned and rehearsed. I haven't read the male officers testimony on his report but from my husband he said he was negative and uncooperative which is a complete lie. our lawyer said that he has experience past cases like this seemingly "staged." taking Driving school in 60 days erases the violation.
